Yesterday was a gorgeous day. I got off work, my sitter for the day said it was the best day my kids have ever had for her ("I've never seen her smile so much"), I was in a fabulous mood. I popped the kids in the car and we went home to settle in the backyard and take a walk around the neighborhood.
When we got home, a switch flipped because what the f*ck..both kids started screaming, my daughter clinged to me like a little spider monkey and my son was screaming for mini muffins. I'm picking my battles because we are not going to ruin the vibe, home slice is getting his muffins and we are going outside.
Fast forward basking in the sun. Everything is going great (still have my spider monkey but she Is happy so It Is cool.) , I am watching my sons little mind go to work with chalk and the water table. All of a sudden, he has forgotten how to fill a bucket with water...I try to verbally explain how to fill the bucket with the positive lil' "You can do tough things!"
Full blown meltdown, "I cant, I cant do it!" No matter how hard I try to explain it. He wanted me to hold his hand and do it for him, like a little puppet lol.
So, I try to change gears, "Let's take a break, do you want to ride in the wagon? Lets go for a walk buddy. " SCREECHING "I don't want to ride in the wagon, my boo boo hurts, I'm hungry, I want to play, my boo boo, I want more water" just rambling off everything (a result of refusing a nap)
Okay, then lets go get a snack and go inside. He hit me with the quick switch "I WANT TO GO IN THE WAGON!" Okay buddy....lets do it..
I go get my fancy pants WonderFold Wagon, I buckle my daughter in, then I put him in...he wants to be buckled, so I'm sweating at this point trying to keep them both happy to get moving on our walk...take a guess what happened next...
MY SON, finally happy, me pushing this wagon out our back gate...MY DAUGHTER SCREECHING...yup switch flip again, her turn lol. So now I'm like trying to soothe her without picking her up and she ain't having it, she's in that like contortion of her body crying mood- so I scoop her out and smell the poop Immediately.
Okay yeah, I wouldn't want to walk a mile with poop on my butt either, so I take a deep breath knowing what is coming next and turn to my son...hey my sweet little angel baby...mommy has to change sissy before we can go, lets hop out...GUESS WHAT....
He starts screeching, now we are alllllllll overstimulated and this walk ain't happening. Nope. I was giving up lol. So I scoop him up, one crying child on each hip.
Inside we go, which made the screaming even louder. I am changing her poopy butt and he is crying loudly behind me. I am trying to tell him we can still go for a walk we just have to get everyone ready and calmed down.
You would have thought the world was ending, so I'm texting my back up...like babe I need your support, you're coming home to take this damn walk with us..nah, he won't be home before dark.
SO I GIVE UP. We aren't going for this walk, mommy can't do it. Let's do something else. So I turn to youtube, yes, we watch kids youtube (shame me...but I am only one person with two screaming children)
That does the trick, both my angel babies are back to being happy and loving. We build some super awesome castles with our magnatiles (best toy ever, link at bottom) and I'm just like wow, I love this. My daughter is crawling and being the destroyer, my son is belly laughing, I am just...bliss. It was fabulous.
At that point, I was ready for the walk, I am a strong independent woman (when they are happy) and off we went! I am so happy we went. We all had so much fun, we played eye spy the entire time! My son is hilarious because on his turn he just picks a random color and says "no" to everything. Like no chance you're guessing what he is eye spying because it does not exist. My daughter is soaking up the environment, checking things out, slowly falling asleep. I'm getting my steps/ self-care in. It was a whole vibe.
It was a rollercoaster but we made it and it ended up being an amazing afternoon- we literally walked (I walked, they lounged) until sunset. I was so happy, we were just vibing.
Moral of the story, ride the rollercoaster. The ups outweigh the downs by a gajillion.
